Yoga has been practiced for several thousand years and was introduced and absorbed into the West in the early 19 century. Although yoga has its roots in Indian thought, it is universal because it's about the means by which we can make changes in our lives. A basic outline of yoga includes the practice of postures (Asana), breathing (Pranayama) and relaxation/meditation (Dhyana).
Asana - postures
We practice the physical postures to develop a clean and healthy body and mind. Yoga asanas stretch, strengthen and open the body and release unwanted toxins. Asanas work on the whole body from the muscles, joints and bones, to the glands, organs and nerves. The body becomes toned, open and supple, while the mind is soothed allowing space for clarity and calm.
Pranayama - breathing
The yogis say that if your breaths are long and full and relaxed, then your life will also be long, full and relaxed. Thus we practice breathing techniques to reduce stress in our lives, to increase the flow of oxygen to every part of the body including the brain, and to generate feelings relaxation, concentration and well being. When practising the postures, the consciously directed breath becomes a powerful tool to release and open tight muscles.
Dhyana - relaxation, meditation
Through the earlier practices of postures and breathing, the mind is now ready for some 'time out'. Through relaxation and meditation we experience the mind settling into a calm and clear state free from the interference of thoughts and desires.
